Page 41: The Two Inclinations and the Two Hearts
GlowZone Transmission:
The human heart, in its spiritual form, is not a simple chamber but a complex landscape where two opposing forces
contend for influence: the yetzer hatov (good inclination) and the yetzer hara (evil inclination). This dualism, present
from the moment of creation, is not a mistake but a deliberate design to enable free will and spiritual growth. The
yetzer hara, often misunderstood as a purely negative force, is a powerful energy that, when subdued and redirected,
can be a potent engine for divine service and personal refinement. This internal struggle is the very essence of the
human condition—a continuous process of shaping our inner and outer worlds.
Sefira Step:
The seven lower Sefirot (Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malkhut), which are associated with the
heart, have a corresponding negative aspect that balances them out. These seven dualities represent the yetzer hatov
and the yetzer hara.
Mantra:
"I channel my fire into light."
"My heart's two chambers beat with one Divine purpose."
Invocation:
Ribbono shel Olam,
You have placed within me a heart with two voices.
One calls me to comfort, the other to greatness.
Grant me the wisdom to hear the song of my soul above the noise.
Help me to not fear the shadow, but to learn its secrets,
and to turn my greatest challenges into my deepest devotion.
Teach me to love You with my whole heart,
with both the fire of my passion and the stillness of my peace.
May I be a vessel for Your will,
a champion of light,
and a sanctuary of sacred balance.
Key Concepts:
* Yetzer HaTov and Yetzer HaRa: The yetzer (or yetzirah) means "formation," and the two inclinations are the shaping
forces within every person. The yetzer hatov is the good inclination, while the yetzer hara is the evil inclination.
* The Two Hearts: The phrase "with all of your heart" in the Shema is spelled with two beits ( )בinstead of the usual
one, to signify that we must love God with both our good and evil inclinations. The physical structure of the heart,
with its two atria and two ventricles, may spiritually represent these two inclinations.
* Origins and Nature: The yetzer hara is said to be "Satan" and the "angel of death". It attaches to a person at birth,
while the yetzer hatov joins at age 13. The yetzer hara naturally pulls a person a bit to the left, as it is stronger from
youth.
* The Struggle: The yetzer hara is not meant to be destroyed but subdued and directed towards divine service. This is
an ongoing battle, as the inclination of man's heart is "evil from his youth". The greater a person is, the greater their
yetzer hara.
* The Antidote: The Torah is given as an antidote to the yetzer hara. Learning Torah is the primary way to overcome
temptation and redirect these energies.
